Meet Yuawima Garcia, one of Kuu’s partner Wixárika artisans. She is proud of being Wixárika, in particular she is proud of her traditional style of dressing, her artisanal craftsmanship, and her language. The Wixárika indigenous communities inhabit the western central part of Mexico, in a section of the Western Sierra Madre. Which forms the states of Jalisco, Nayari, Zacatecas and Durang. Yuawima is not only hard working and incredibly talented, but she is also a proud mother.
The first item she ever made was a floral bracelet. She is proud of the pieces she makes as they represent her traditions. Kuu is important to Yuawima as she states “Kuu gave me the opportunity that I did not have”. She is proud of herself and Kuu “as together we will continue to grow”. Through her dedication and work ethic, she has instilled strong values in her children to pursue their dreams. By continuing her work with Kuu, Yuawima plans to provide bright futures for her children and give them opportunities she never had. She is excited and proud that her daughter also has interest in using her skills that she has been taught through generations to one day also work with Kuu.
